NORWOOD PUBLIC LIBRARY CHILDREN’S LIBRARIAN JOB DESCRIPTION

Develop, organize, implement and deliver services in Children’s Library.  Plan and execute programs, activities and collection development in order to enhance library services to the community’s youth, serving patrons ranging in ages birth through young adult, under the supervision of the Director and the Library Board of Trustees.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Develop and implement programs/activities for youth through story times, special programs, etc. in order to encourage reading, viewing and listening of library materials and to help create lifelong library users
  • Develop live and recorded Zoom programs and YouTube content to help provide access to library programming for at-home kids and busy families
  • Proficiency in conducting/attending online meeting platforms
  • Coordinate with DCL Youth Services Coordinator any additional youth library services
  • Conduct outreach programs to area schools/daycare centers and other community groups to promote library services/programs
  • Collection Development of youth materials, including selection, maintenance and withdrawals
  • Organize book displays, create user guides, promotional materials, flyers and other public relations materials regarding youth services; promote services on social network sites in accordance with social network policy
  • Attend workshops, CSD meetings, NPL Board meetings and any other meetings as required by the NPL Board of Trustees
  • Prepare and present monthly/annual reports regarding youth activities, including budget expenditures, to the NPL Board of Trustees
  • Provide reference and reader’s advisory guidance to youth and families
  • Assist patrons in using the online catalog, other electronic tools and resources and in using library services, equipment and facilities

MINOR DUTIES:

  • Conduct library tours for youth groups
  • Catalogue and process materials.
  • Work Circulation Desk when necessary
  • Perform general library work as necessary

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate’s Degree preferred
  • Ability to acquire necessary Library Science credits (9)
  • Ability to keep abreast of trends in library services to youth.
  • Knowledge of children’s literature and materials
  • Ability to communicate clearly in oral and written communications with patrons, coworkers and supervisors
  • Previous library experience and/or experience planning programs and/or working with youth
  • Proficiency in the use of information technology, computers and devices, word processing and library computer system
  • Ability to follow library policies and procedures
  • Ability to adapt to changes
  • Must successfully complete and provide Background Checks (State Police; State Child Abuse; and FBI fingerprint clearances) prior to employment; must be current within the last 3 years

  • Hand-eye coordination necessary to operate computers and various office equipment
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to repetitively perform fine motor manipulations including typing and writing.

NORWOOD PUBLIC LIBRARY LIBRARY AIDE JOB DESCRIPTION

The Library Aide will be responsible for daily tasks in the Library, including, but not limited to, working at the Circulation Desk and assisting the public, under the supervision of the Director.

DUTIES

  • Work Circulation Desk: check out/in materials, issue patron library cards, file applications and other duties as necessary
  • Assist patrons in locating materials
  • Assist patrons in use of reference sources, card catalogue, printers, copier and automated information system
  • Request/procure materials for remote holds and Access PA
  • Reshelve materials/shelf read
  • Perform clerical activities: answer phones, file, word processing and printing/copying
  • Fax for public
  • Assist Staff as necessary
  • Other duties as necessary as assigned by Director

SKILLS/JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or GED; previous library experience preferred
  • Ability to communicate clearly in oral/written communications with patrons, co-workers and supervisors
  • Ability to follow library policies and procedures
  • Proficiency in use of word processing
  • Proficiency in searching the Internet, Web and Electronic Databases
  • Ability to follow library policies and procedures
  • Must successfully complete and provide Background Checks (State Police; State Child Abuse; and FBI fingerprint clearances) prior to employment; must be current within the last 3 years
